Put a list of unrelated domains on one certificate

One certificate carrying a list of names — up to 250 of them, on completely unrelated domains. It is what a wildcard cannot do, it is what Exchange and unified communications need, and it replaces a spreadsheet of renewal dates with one.

  • Up to 250 hostnames
  • Unrelated domains welcome
  • The Exchange and UCC answer
  • One renewal date
  • 33 certificates, from $114

What one missing hostname does

Not secure autodiscover.acme.com

One name left off the list. On Exchange this is the certificate prompt every member of staff dismisses every morning, until somebody works out which hostname is missing.

autodiscover.acme.com Secure

On the certificate alongside mail., smtp., imap., webmail. and your web names — one file, one install, one renewal date.

A list of names, not a pattern

Each hostname is written into the certificate explicitly, which is why a multi-domain certificate can span domains a wildcard cannot touch. The flip side is that a name nobody listed is not covered — though adding one is a free reissue rather than a new purchase.

Covered by this certificate

Not covered — you would need

Is this the right one for you?

The most expensive mistake on this site is buying the wrong shape and finding out at install time. Two lists, and the second one is a route out rather than a dead end.

Buy this if

  • You run two or more registered domains — a .com and a .co.uk, or several brands
  • You are securing Exchange or Microsoft 365 hybrid and need mail., autodiscover., webmail. on one file
  • A firewall, load balancer or appliance answers on a handful of unrelated names
  • You want one purchase order and one renewal date instead of five
  • The hostname list is known and reasonably stable

Look at this instead if

Where this shape earns its price

Buying one of these is almost always a decision about administration rather than about encryption. That is a good reason, and it is worth being explicit about it.

  • Mail servers answer on more names than anyone expectsmail., smtp., imap., webmail. and, on Exchange, autodiscover. Miss one and Outlook prompts every user every morning until somebody works out why. This is the single most common reason people end up here.
  • A wildcard cannot cross a registered domainIf your estate is acme.com and acme.co.uk, no wildcard will cover both. Each name goes on the list explicitly, which is exactly what this shape is for.
  • Consolidation is the real savingFive certificates means five renewals, five installs and five chances to miss one. One file on one date, deployed once, is worth more than the difference in sticker price to anybody who has been on the wrong end of a lapse.
  • Extra names are a free reissue, not a new purchaseEvery certificate here reissues free for the whole term. Adding a hostname you forgot costs you a redeploy and nothing else, provided you bought enough slots.

Prices are for one year. Most of these can be bought for two, which is the longest term the industry rules allow to be sold — the saving is shown on the product page.

How to choose between them

Once you are on the right page the remaining decision is small, and it comes down to three things in this order.

  1. How many names you actually need

Count them before you buy, including the ones you forget: the bare domain, the www, every mail hostname, autodiscover, and anything a load balancer answers on. Certificates here include between three and five and sell more in blocks.

  2. Whether the company name has to be in it

The domain validated ones issue in minutes with no documents. The organisation validated ones take one to three working days, involve a phone call, and put your registered company name inside where an auditor can read it.

  3. What one extra name costs

The per-name price varies more than the headline does, and on an estate that grows it matters more. Ask us for the marginal figure on any certificate here before you commit — it is often the deciding number.

Questions we get asked before people order

What is a SAN, and is a UCC certificate the same thing?

SAN stands for Subject Alternative Name — the field in the certificate that holds the extra hostnames. UCC, or Unified Communications Certificate, is Microsoft’s name for the same technology sold with Exchange and Skype for Business in mind. Technically they are the same certificate; the UCC products simply bundle more names by default.

Can I add a hostname after it is issued?

Yes, as long as you have a free slot. Reissues are free and unlimited for the whole term on every certificate here, so you regenerate the certificate with the new name on it and redeploy. If you are out of slots, extra names can be bought and added at any time.

Do the domains have to be related, or owned by the same company?

They do not have to be related, but you do have to prove control of every one of them — and on organisation validated certificates, that the vetted company is entitled to use them. Practically that means an email or DNS record per domain at the domain validated level.

Does it cover subdomains of the names on it?

No. Each entry is a literal hostname, so listing acme.com does not cover shop.acme.com. You either list the subdomain as another name, or you look at a multi-domain wildcard, which lets you put *.acme.com on the list instead.

How many names can one certificate hold?

Up to 250 on most of the certificates here, and the listing shows both the number included and the maximum for each. In practice very few estates exceed twenty, and the ones that do are usually better served by a multi-domain wildcard.

Will one certificate work across several servers?

Yes. Everything on this page is licensed for unlimited servers, which is exactly what you want when the same hostname list is served by a load balancer and two application servers.

The other ways to cover a website

Two of these answer what the certificate has to cover and three answer how much you have to prove about who you are. Every one of them is a full price list like this page.

Send us the hostname list and we will price it

A line about what the site does and which names it answers on is enough. We come back with the cheapest certificate that genuinely covers it — including when that is one certificate instead of the four you were about to buy. No obligation and no sales call.
