Websites & Email · Multi-domain wildcard · several domains and their subdomains

Cover several domains and all their subdomains with one file

The widest coverage a single certificate can carry: several registered domains, and every subdomain of each of them, on one file. It is the expensive shape, so it earns its price when the honest alternative is four or five certificates — and not before.

  • Several domains at once
  • Every subdomain of each
  • One file, one renewal
  • Unlimited servers
  • 9 certificates, from $267.24

Not secure shop.acme.co.uk

A second registered domain. No wildcard for *.acme.com will ever reach it, however many subdomains that one covers.

shop.acme.co.uk Secure

Covered by the same file as *.acme.com and *.secondbrand.com. One certificate, one renewal date, three brands.

Wildcards and plain names on the same list

This shape is the multi-domain certificate with wildcards allowed in the name list, so each entry can be either a literal hostname or a star. That is what lets one file cover three brands completely. The one-label rule still applies to each star.

Is this the right one for you?

The most expensive mistake on this site is buying the wrong shape and finding out at install time. Two lists, and the second one is a route out rather than a dead end.

Buy this if

  • You run an agency, a group of brands, or a business with several country domains
  • Each of those domains has subdomains of its own that need covering
  • You are genuinely about to buy four or five certificates instead
  • A single load balancer or reverse proxy fronts the lot
  • One renewal date across the whole estate is worth real money to you

Look at this instead if

When the maths works, and when it does not

This is the one shape on the site we will actively talk people out of, so it is worth setting out the arithmetic rather than the adjectives.

  • Count the certificates it genuinely replacesOne wildcard per domain is the alternative. If you have three domains with subdomains, compare this against three wildcards — not against one. On three or more it usually wins; on two it usually does not.
  • The administrative saving is the larger halfThree wildcards means three validations, three installs, three renewal dates and three chances for one of them to lapse unnoticed on a Saturday. One file removes all of that, and that is worth more than most people price it at.
  • It does not solve depth, only breadthEach star still matches one label. A certificate covering *.acme.com and *.acme.co.uk still does not cover eu.shop.acme.com. If your estate is deep rather than wide, tell us before you buy — the answer is a different arrangement of names.
  • Two domains is usually the wrong side of the lineAt two domains, two wildcards are normally cheaper and no harder to run. We would rather tell you that here than sell you the larger certificate and have you work it out afterwards.

Prices are for one year. Most of these can be bought for two, which is the longest term the industry rules allow to be sold — the saving is shown on the product page.

How to choose between them

Once you are on the right page the remaining decision is small, and it comes down to three things in this order.

  1. How many wildcard entries you need

Each domain whose subdomains you want covered needs its own star in the list. Count the domains first, then check the number of names each certificate includes before comparing prices — the included count varies more than the headline.

  2. Whether the company name has to be in it

The cheapest options here are domain validated and issue in minutes. Organisation validation adds one to three working days, a phone call and your registered company name inside the certificate.

  3. What an extra name costs afterwards

Estates of this shape grow. The marginal price of adding a fourth or fifth wildcard entry mid-term differs sharply between these products, and it is worth asking us for that figure before you commit.

Questions we get asked before people order

Can I mix wildcard and ordinary hostnames on one certificate?

Yes, and most people do. The name list takes either form, so one file can carry *.acme.com, acme.com, and a single unrelated hostname like shop.partner.com. That flexibility is the practical reason to choose this shape over separate wildcards.

Is this cheaper than buying a wildcard per domain?

From about three domains, usually yes, and the gap widens as you add more. At two domains it usually is not, and we will tell you so — send us the list and we will price both ways before you commit to either.

Does each star still only match one label?

Yes. *.acme.com covers shop.acme.com and not eu.shop.acme.com, exactly as an ordinary wildcard does. Being multi-domain changes how many domains you can cover, not how deep the coverage goes.

How is validation handled across several domains?

You prove control of every domain on the list, one at a time — an email to an address at each domain, or a DNS record on each. Organisation validated certificates add a single company check on top, not one per domain.

Can I add a fourth domain after it is issued?

Yes, if the certificate has a free slot: reissues are free and unlimited for the whole term. If it is full, extra name slots can be bought and added mid-term. Buying one spare slot at the outset is usually cheaper than adding one later.

Can I put it on several servers?

Yes, on as many as you like at no extra cost. Given this shape almost always fronts a load balancer and a set of origin servers, that is normally the point.

The other ways to cover a website

Two of these answer what the certificate has to cover and three answer how much you have to prove about who you are. Every one of them is a full price list like this page.

Send us the hostname list and we will price it

A line about what the site does and which names it answers on is enough. We come back with the cheapest certificate that genuinely covers it — including when that is one certificate instead of the four you were about to buy. No obligation and no sales call.
