These are legacy enterprise listings, and they are the most expensive certificates on this site by a wide margin. Symantec has not run a certificate authority since 2017 — the business was bought by DigiCert and the brand has since been retired. Before you order anything here, read the panel below: for almost everybody, one of the cheaper brands is the same certificate.

Read this before ordering

Symantec sold its website security business — the certificate authority — to DigiCert in 2017. The sale followed browser findings about certificates that had been misissued under Symantec’s roots, and Chrome and Firefox went on to remove trust in those legacy roots entirely. Certificates issued after the handover come from DigiCert’s infrastructure and are trusted normally, and DigiCert has since retired the Symantec brand in favour of its own. The practical consequence is simple: there is no longer a Symantec certificate that is meaningfully different from a DigiCert one, and the prices on this page are historic enterprise prices.

Talk to us first — a cheaper brand is almost always the same certificate

We would rather say this than take the order quietly. If a contract or an internal standard genuinely names Symantec, tell us what it says and we will confirm what satisfies it before you spend anything. Otherwise GeoTrust and Thawte are the same DigiCert issuance under names that are still current, and Sectigo is cheaper again.

Because people search for them and because a handful of organisations are contractually stuck with the name. That is the whole reason — it is not a recommendation.

  • Some contracts still name the brandLong-running framework agreements and internal security standards occasionally specify Symantec by name. If yours does, we would rather you found a real price list than a dead page.

Questions we get asked about Symantec

Is Symantec still a certificate authority?

No. Symantec sold its website security business to DigiCert in 2017 and no longer operates a certificate authority. DigiCert has since retired the Symantec brand in favour of its own.

Were Symantec certificates distrusted by browsers?

The legacy roots were. After findings about misissued certificates, Google and Mozilla removed trust in the old Symantec-operated roots. Certificates issued after DigiCert took over come from DigiCert’s infrastructure and are trusted normally.

I have a Symantec certificate that is expiring. What do I replace it with?

In most cases a GeoTrust or Thawte certificate at the same validation level, which is the same DigiCert issuance under a current name, or a Sectigo one if the brand does not matter. Send us the details and we will name the cheapest thing that meets your requirement.

Why are these prices so high?

They are historic enterprise list prices from when the brand was positioned at the top of the market. They are not a reflection of the certificate being better than a modern equivalent.

My contract names Symantec. What do I do?

Send us the wording. Most contracts that name a brand were written before the DigiCert acquisition and are satisfied by the successor product; we will confirm that in writing before you order anything.
