Find the right certificate in three questions
What are you securing, what must it cover, and what must it prove? Answer those and we show the certificate that fits, its price today and two alternatives from other brands.
- Takes under a minute
- Live prices
- Two other brands to compare
1. What do you need to secure?
2. What does it need to cover?
Count hostnames, not servers. One server can answer on several names, and one name can sit on several servers.
3. What should it prove about you?
No certificate authority issues an EV wildcard. For subdomains, choose OV, or list the names you need on an EV multi-domain certificate.

Email signing certificate (S/MIME)
Issued to a person, not a domain. It signs your mail so recipients can check it is really from you, encrypts it end to end, and can log you in to VPNs and portals.
Your best fit
Code signing certificate
Proves the file came from you and has not been changed since. Without one, Windows SmartScreen warns people away from your installer.

Document signing certificate
A personal email certificate can sign a PDF, but Adobe Reader may flag the signature. A document signing certificate on a secure token is what Adobe trusts out of the box.

Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)
The Class 3 certificate Indian government portals ask for: company filings, income tax, GST, EPFO, e-tenders and e-auctions.
Good to know in 2026: since 15 March 2026, a public SSL certificate can be valid for at most 200 days. A one- or two-year plan still covers the whole term; you simply reissue the certificate during the term. What changed and how to prepare →

Not a website?
Signing and identity certificates are issued to a person or a company, not to a domain.
Common questions
Is a cheap DV certificate less secure than EV?
No. DV, OV and EV certificates use the same encryption. What you pay more for is the checking the authority does on your organisation, the company name inside the certificate, and the warranty.
Wildcard or multi-domain: which do I need?
A wildcard covers every subdomain of one domain (*.example.com), including ones you add later. A multi-domain certificate lists different domains by name (example.com, example.in). If you need both, a multi-domain wildcard does it on one certificate.
Does a wildcard cover the bare domain?
A wildcard for *.example.com covers www.example.com, shop.example.com and so on. Most authorities, including Sectigo and Comodo, also add example.com itself at no charge. It does not cover a second level such as a.b.example.com.
Can I use one certificate on several servers?
Yes. Comodo and Sectigo certificates, which are our picks, come with unlimited server licences: install the same certificate on every server that answers on those names.
When should I renew?
Renew about 30 days before expiry, so there is time to validate and install. Certificates now last at most 200 days, so on a longer plan expect a reissue roughly every six months. Our free renewal alert and SSL checker help you keep track.
Still not sure?
Send us the domain and what it is used for. We reply with the cheapest certificate that covers it, including when a free one is enough.
