What extended validation puts inside the certificate
Same encryption. A different subject.
On top of everything organisation validation checks, the authority verifies the legal jurisdiction your company is incorporated in, its registration number, and that the people authorising the request are entitled to do so. All of it is written into the certificate and none of it can be self-declared.
These fields are the practical difference. An auditor, a payment provider or an automated scanner can read the incorporation jurisdiction and company number straight out of your certificate.

Read this before you buy: the green bar is gone
This is the most important thing on the page and the reason a lot of people arrive here with the wrong expectation, so it goes first rather than in a footnote.
- Every major browser removed the green treatment years agoChrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge all stopped painting the address bar green and stopped showing the company name in it. To a casual visitor an extended validation certificate now looks identical to a fifteen dollar one. If you are buying EV for something a customer will see, you will not get it.

EV code signing certificates in this list

How to choose between them
Once you are on the right page the remaining decision is small, and it comes down to three things in this order.
The shape you need, first
Extended validation is a level, not a shape. Single-name and multi-domain certificates are both available with it. Note that no authority issues an EV wildcard — the rules forbid it — so a wildcard estate means organisation validation instead.
Warranty, if a figure has been specified
This is where the largest numbers live, running to two million. Everything here satisfies a requirement that simply says "EV", so if nobody has named a figure, price should decide.
How long you can wait
Three to seven working days is realistic, and longer if your registry entry is stale or your authorised signatory is hard to reach. Start it earlier than you think you need to, and check your public records first.
Questions we get asked before people order
Will this turn the address bar green?
No. Every major browser removed that treatment several years ago, and none of them shows the company name in the address bar any more. A visitor sees the same padlock they would see on a fifteen dollar certificate. If a visible green bar is what you are buying, no certificate on the market can sell you one.
Then what is the point of extended validation now?
What it proves, and to whom. The vetting is genuine and the incorporation jurisdiction, registration number and business category are inside the certificate where an auditor, a payment provider or an automated scanner can read them. The warranties are also the largest available. It is bought to satisfy a requirement, not to impress a visitor.
How long does it take?
Three to seven working days in the ordinary case. The authority verifies your company against a public register, confirms your physical presence and operational existence, and speaks to an authorised signatory. Anything out of date on your registry entry adds days.
What will we have to provide?
A registered company in good standing, a verifiable business address, an independently listed telephone number, and a named person the authority can confirm is authorised to request it. Where a public register is thin, a solicitor’s or accountant’s letter is the usual supporting evidence.
Can I get an EV wildcard?
No, and nobody can sell you one. The CA/Browser Forum rules that govern extended validation forbid wildcards outright, because a wildcard cannot be tied to a verified identity in the way the rules require. If you need every subdomain covered, organisation validation on a wildcard is the answer.
Is it worth it over organisation validation?
Only if something specifies it. Both put your vetted company name inside the certificate; extended validation adds jurisdiction, registration number and a stricter process, and costs several times as much. If a policy, an auditor, a contract or a payment provider names EV, buy EV. If not, buy OV and spend the difference elsewhere.
